Best practices for authentic branding photography.

Authentic... we hear that word all the time, but what does it even mean? In the world of branding photography, "authenticity" has become such a buzzword that it's almost lost its meaning. As a branding photographer with years of experience, I've grappled with this concept, trying to understand its true essence and how to apply it in my work. In this blog post, I'll share my insights on what it really means to be authentic as a branding photographer and how we can bring genuine authenticity to our client's visual narratives.

The Authenticity Dilemma

Let's address the elephant in the room: the authenticity dilemma. Social media reigns supreme and carefully curated images flood our screens, the line between authentic representation and idealized portrayal has become increasingly blurred.

Branding photographers, often find ourselves balancing our clients' desire for polished, professional images with the need for genuine, relatable content.

The key lies in understanding that authenticity isn't about perfection or even about capturing reality exactly as it is. Instead, it's about revealing the true essence of a brand or individual in a way that resonates with their audience.

Too many companies want their brands to reflect some idealized, perfected image of themselves. As a consequence, their brands acquire no texture, no character and no public trust. -Richard Branson

Redefining Authenticity in Branding Photography

1. Beyond the Surface

Authentic branding photography goes beyond capturing a pleasant image. It's about digging deeper and understanding the core of what makes a brand or individual unique.

This means that before every shoot I :

  • Conduct in-depth consultations with clients to understand their brand values, mission, and target audience.

  • Research the client's industry and competitors to identify what sets them apart.

  • Spend time observing the client in their natural environment to capture genuine moments and expressions.

2. Embracing Imperfections

It's a huge that authenticity means showing everything, warts and all. While honesty is crucial, authenticity in branding photography is more about embracing the unique characteristics that make a brand or individual stand out. This might mean:

  • Highlighting your unique style, even if it doesn't conform to current trends.

  • Candid moments that reveal personality, like a hearty laugh or a focused expression.

  • Incorporating elements of the client's real work environment, even if it's not picture-perfect.

3. Storytelling Through Visuals

Let's be honest authentic branding photography is essentially visual storytelling. Each image should contribute to the larger narrative of the brand or individual. This involves:

  • Creating a shot list that reflects different aspects of the client's brand story.

  • Using composition, lighting, and props to enhance the story being told.

  • Ensuring consistency across images to create a cohesive visual narrative.

4. Building Trust and Comfort

Perhaps the most crucial aspect of capturing authentic images is creating an environment where you comfortable and trusting. Taking away fear is the single biggest thing that a photographer can do to make you more genuine. This can be achieved by:

  • Taking the time to build rapport with the client before the shoot.

  • Choosing locations where you feel at ease, often shooting on location rather than in a studio.

  • Providing clear direction while also allowing for spontaneous, natural moments.

The Art of Authentic Branding Photography

"People do not buy goods and services. They buy relations, stories and magic." -Seth Godin

Being an authentic branding photographer isn't about abandoning technique or eschewing all forms of enhancement. It's about finding the perfect balance between professionalism and genuineness. It's about creating images that not only look good but feel true.

Authenticity isn't perfection - it's honesty. My job as branding photographer isn't to create a façade, but to reveal the truth in the most compelling way possible. This is the real challenge, and the real reward, of what I do.

In a world inundated with carefully curated images, authentic branding photography has the power to cut through the noise and create real connections. And isn't that, after all, what great photography is all about?
